ISSS - Standards

Professional Standards for Sauna Practice, Safety and Education
The International Sauna Standardisation System (ISSS) provides a structured professional reference framework for sauna practice, safety and education.
Developed by the International Sauna Academy (ISA), the ISSS brings together professional principles from sauna science, physiology, thermal physics, safety, education and professional practice and translates them into clearly defined reference standards.
The purpose of the ISSS Standards is not to prescribe one universal form of sauna culture. Sauna traditions differ between countries and regions and form an important part of the cultural diversity of sauna bathing.
Standardisation becomes relevant where common terminology, scientific principles, professional procedures, safety requirements and educational standards provide greater clarity and reliability.
The ISSS standardises professional principles – not sauna culture.

What Is an ISSS Standard?
An ISSS Standard is a documented professional reference for a defined area of sauna practice, safety or education.
Depending on its subject, a standard may define terminology, describe scientific and physiological principles, establish professional requirements or provide a framework for consistent professional practice.
A standard should make clear what subject it addresses, which principles apply and on what professional or scientific basis those principles are derived.
This allows professional practice to be discussed and evaluated using transparent criteria rather than relying solely on tradition, personal preference or marketing terminology.

Why Standards Are Important
Professional sauna practice combines several fields of knowledge.
The thermal environment of a sauna is governed by physical principles. The human response to this environment is determined by physiology and thermoregulation. Professional procedures such as Sauna Aufguss can change humidity, air movement and heat transfer. Cooling procedures influence the subsequent thermal response, while operational decisions affect guest safety.
These relationships make it difficult to consider individual aspects of sauna practice in isolation.
Professional standards provide a common framework for describing these relationships and establishing consistent professional principles.
They also create a reference for education. If professional competence is to be taught and assessed, the principles on which that competence is based must first be clearly defined.

Scope of the ISSS Standards
The ISSS focuses on areas in which professional standardisation provides a meaningful benefit.
This includes terminology, health-oriented sauna bathing, Sauna Aufguss, safety and professional education.
The individual standards are interconnected. Terminology provides a common professional language. Standards for sauna bathing and Aufguss describe professional practice. Safety standards define requirements where professional actions may affect guests or employees. Education standards provide the framework for translating professional principles into structured learning.
Together, these elements form a coherent professional reference system.

Sauna Terminology
Consistent terminology is the foundation of professional communication.
Sauna terminology can vary considerably between countries, languages, training organisations and professional traditions. In some cases, the same term is used for different concepts. In others, several terms describe essentially the same process.
The ISSS terminology framework provides consistent definitions for important terms used in sauna science, professional practice, education and qualification.
This is particularly important for international education and translation.
Established terms such as Aufguss can be retained where translation would alter or reduce their professional meaning.
Terminology therefore provides the linguistic foundation for the other ISSS standards.

Health-Oriented Sauna Bath
The health-oriented sauna bath is understood within the ISSS as a structured heterothermal bathing procedure involving heat exposure, cooling and recovery.
The corresponding standard describes the professional principles underlying these phases and their relationship to human thermoregulation.
It considers the sauna bath as a complete process rather than reducing it to time spent inside a hot room.
Heat exposure represents only one part of the procedure. Appropriate cooling and recovery are equally relevant to the overall structure of the sauna bath.
The objective is not maximum thermal exposure but a structured procedure that takes account of physiological responses and individual tolerance.

Sauna Aufguss
Sauna Aufguss is a professional procedure that temporarily changes the thermal conditions experienced by sauna guests.
Water applied to heated sauna stones evaporates and increases the water vapour content of the air. Air movement influences heat and mass transfer between the sauna environment and the human body.
The corresponding ISSS standard provides a professional framework for understanding and controlling these processes.
It addresses the relationship between water application, evaporation, humidity, air movement, thermal exposure and guest response. Where fragrances or essential oils are used, their professional application and safety must also be considered.
The objective is a controlled and professionally justified Aufguss, not simply the greatest possible heat intensity.

Safety Standards
Safety is an integral part of all professional sauna practice.
The ISSS Safety Standards provide a professional framework for identifying and managing risks associated with thermal exposure, Sauna Aufguss, operational procedures and interaction with sauna guests.
Safety considerations include both prevention and appropriate response when problems occur.
A fundamental principle of the ISSS is that safety-critical requirements have a special status. A missing safety-critical competence cannot simply be compensated for by extensive knowledge or ability in another professional area.
Safety-critical requirements are mandatory where they are necessary for responsible professional practice.

Education Standards
Professional standards become particularly important when professional competence is taught.
The ISSS Education Standards provide a framework for developing sauna education based on defined knowledge, skills, learning outcomes and professional responsibilities.
Education should not be described only by course duration or a list of topics. A meaningful educational standard must also identify what participants are expected to know, understand and be able to do.
This creates the connection between professional standards and professional qualifications.
Standards as a Reference – Not a Claim of Universal Authority
The ISSS is a professional standards framework developed by the International Sauna Academy.
Its standards provide a documented reference for the Academy's professional practice, education, publications and qualification system and can also be used as a transparent reference by interested professionals and organisations.
The designation International reflects the intended international applicability and use of the framework. It should not be interpreted as a claim that ISSS standards have been adopted as statutory, governmental or universally recognised international standards.
This distinction is important for transparency.
The value of a professional standard should be determined by the quality of its reasoning, documentation and applicability rather than by an unsupported claim of authority.

Scientific Basis and Professional Recommendations
Different standards may rely on different types and strengths of evidence.
Some requirements can be based directly on established physical or physiological principles. Others may draw on scientific literature, professional experience, safety considerations or a combination of these sources.
The ISSS therefore seeks to distinguish between scientific evidence, established scientific principles, professional requirements and professional recommendations.
Where the available evidence does not justify a precise scientific conclusion, a professional recommendation should not be presented as though such certainty existed.
The strength of a statement should reflect the strength of the evidence behind it.

Relationship Between the Standards
The individual ISSS Standards should not be understood as isolated documents.
Terminology used in one standard should correspond with terminology used in the others. Safety principles should remain consistent across different areas of professional practice. Educational standards should reflect the professional requirements established by the relevant subject standards.
This creates an interconnected standards framework rather than a collection of unrelated recommendations.
Where one standard refers to another, the relevant definitions and professional principles can therefore be used consistently throughout the system.

Standards and Professional Qualifications
The ISSS does not itself define whether an individual person is professionally qualified.
That function belongs to the International Sauna Qualification System (ISQS).
The ISSS establishes the professional reference. The ISQS determines which knowledge, skills and competences must be demonstrated at different qualification levels.
For example, an ISSS standard may describe the professional principles of Sauna Aufguss. The ISQS can then define whether a person at a particular qualification level must understand these principles, apply them in practice or be able to assess and teach them.

The relationship is therefore:
ISSS defines the standard. ISQS defines the qualification.

Standards and Professional Responsibility
Not every professional needs the same depth of knowledge of every standard.
A person responsible for basic sauna supervision requires different competence from a professional conducting Aufguss. A sauna specialist requires broader competence, while a Sauna Master responsible for operational quality and leadership must be able to understand and evaluate professional relationships at a higher level.
The applicable standard may therefore remain the same while the required level of competence changes.
This is where ISSS Standards, ISQS Qualification Standards and ISQS Occupational Profiles interact.
The standard defines the professional principle. The qualification defines the required competence. The occupational profile defines the responsibility.

Development and Revision
ISSS Standards are intended to provide stable professional orientation without becoming disconnected from developing knowledge.
They can therefore be reviewed when new scientific evidence, safety-relevant information, technological developments or significant changes in professional practice become available.
A review does not automatically require a change. Existing standards should remain stable where their professional and scientific foundations remain valid.
Where revision is justified, substantive changes should be documented and identifiable through version control.
The ISSS Development & Revision framework describes this process in detail.

A Transparent Standards Framework
The ISSS is intended to make professional sauna standards visible, understandable and open to examination.
A professional requirement should not be accepted merely because it has traditionally been stated in a particular way. Wherever possible, its purpose and professional basis should be identifiable.
This principle also allows standards to be questioned and improved.
Transparency does not weaken a professional standard. It makes clear why the standard exists and provides the basis on which it can be evaluated.
Professional standards should be understandable, justified and open to revision when better evidence becomes available.

ISSS Standards Overview
The ISSS framework currently covers the central areas of Sauna Terminology, Health-Oriented Sauna Bath, Sauna Aufguss, Safety Standards and Education Standards. The framework can be extended when additional areas of professional sauna practice require clearly defined standards.
Development and revision are documented separately to ensure that the framework remains transparent as it evolves.
Professional practice needs principles. Professional principles need a transparent standard.
