Professional Sauna Education for an International Industry
The International Sauna Academy – ISA develops structured, professional and science-based education for the international sauna industry. Our objective is not simply to teach individual techniques.
We want to contribute to a more professional understanding of sauna as a complete field of knowledge and practice. That includes far more than Aufguss. It includes thermal physiology, health-oriented sauna bathing, safety, fragrances, technology, hygiene, guest care, operations, quality management and professional responsibility. For this reason, ISA combines education, qualification, specialist literature and professional standards within one international framework.

Our Mission
Sauna has become a global phenomenon. Its traditions differ from country to country. Its practical forms range from quiet Finnish sauna bathing to highly developed Aufguss culture, spa concepts, thermal facilities, hotels, wellness resorts and professional sauna operations. But wherever sauna is offered professionally, the same fundamental questions arise:

• How does heat affect the human body?
• How should thermal load be managed?
• How should guests be supervised?
• How can risks be recognised?
• How should Aufguss, fragrances and essential oils be used responsibly?
• What technical and hygienic requirements are necessary?
• How can quality be defined, documented and improved?

ISA exists to help answer these questions systematically. Our mission is to develop professional sauna education that combines: science, practical competence, safety and responsibility.

More Than a Sauna School
The International Sauna Academy is designed as more than a provider of individual courses.
ISA is developing an integrated professional system consisting of four closely connected areas:

• Education: Structured online and practical training for different levels of professional responsibility.
• Qualification: The International Sauna Qualification System – ISQS provides progressive qualification levels from basic knowledge to advanced professional competence.
• Publications: Books, training compendia and specialist literature provide the scientific and professional foundation of ISA education.
• Standards: Through the International Sauna Standardisation System – ISSS, ISA is developing terminology, recommendations and professional frameworks for selected areas of sauna practice.

Together, these elements create a common structure for professional sauna education.

The International Sauna Qualification System – ISQS
Not every person working in a sauna needs the same level of knowledge. A guest who wants to understand healthy sauna bathing needs different competencies from an employee conducting an Aufguss. A specialist responsible for sauna operations requires broader knowledge. And someone carrying the title Sauna Master® should demonstrate advanced professional competence. The ISQS therefore uses progressive qualification levels:

• Level 0 – Health-Oriented Sauna User
• Level 1 – Sauna Safety Assistant
• Level 2 – Sauna Infusion Specialist
• Level 3 – Sauna Specialist
• Level 4 – Sauna Master
• Level 5 – Instructor / Trainer

The system makes qualification pathways transparent and allows knowledge and responsibility to develop step by step.

The Sauna Master – Our Flagship Qualification
At the centre of the current development of ISA is the new Sauna Master® programme. The programme comprises 101 specialist modules and is designed as a comprehensive professional qualification rather than a short seminar focused on individual sauna techniques. Its curriculum includes:

• heat and cold exposure

• fragrances and essential oils
• occupational safety
• emergency organisation
• guest care
• sauna technology
• ventilation
• hygiene
• water and surfaces

The Sauna Master represents the highest comprehensive professional qualification currently offered within ISQS.

Science as a Foundation
Professional sauna education should not be based solely on tradition, personal experience or statements that have been repeated for decades. Experience is important. Tradition is important.
But both become stronger when they can be understood and evaluated through reliable knowledge.
ISA therefore places particular emphasis on scientific foundations. Thermal physiology, physics, chemistry, hygiene, toxicology, occupational safety and related disciplines are translated into practical knowledge for professional sauna operations. Our objective is not to turn sauna professionals into scientists. Our objective is to make scientific understanding usable in everyday professional decisions.

From Knowledge to Professional Competence
Knowing a fact is not the same as being able to act professionally. Professional competence develops when a person can:

• understand a situation
• assess relevant factors
• recognise risks
• make appropriate decisions
• explain those decisions
• apply standards
• evaluate quality
• take responsibility

This principle shapes the structure of ISA education. The higher the qualification level, the less education is about reproducing isolated facts and the more it is about understanding relationships and making independent professional judgements.

Our Educational Philosophy
ISA follows several basic principles. Understand Before You Perform. Practical techniques are easier to use safely and correctly when the underlying processes are understood. 

• Qualification Should Reflect Responsibility. The title of a qualification should correspond to the actual level of competence behind it.
• Theory and Practice Belong Together. Online education can communicate extensive professional knowledge efficiently.
• Practical competencies, however, must also be trained, observed and assessed in practice where necessary.
• Safety Is Part of Professional Quality. Safety is not an additional module beside the “real” sauna experience. It is part of professional sauna practice.
• Tradition and Science Are Not Opposites. Traditional sauna culture contains valuable experience.
• Scientific knowledge helps us understand, evaluate and further develop it.

Our Roots: Deutsche Sauna-Akademie
The International Sauna Academy builds on more than two decades of professional sauna education and specialist work in Germany. The Deutsche Sauna-Akademie represents an important part of this professional background. Its experience in training, specialist publications and professional sauna practice has contributed to the development of the international ISA concept. The International Sauna Academy takes this foundation into an international context. ISA is therefore not intended simply as an English-language copy of a German training organisation. It develops the underlying professional approach further for different countries, languages and sauna cultures. German professional experience – international perspective. The objective is not to build ISA around one individual. Quite the opposite. The long-term aim is to translate accumulated expertise into a structured educational system that can be taught, applied and further developed internationally by qualified instructors and partner organisations.

Publications and Professional Literature
Books are an important part of the ISA educational concept. They provide depth that short course materials alone cannot offer. The current publication structure includes:

• Sauna Master Training Compendium: The multi-volume training compendium forms the direct professional knowledge base for the new Sauna Master programme.
• The Science of Sauna: A comprehensive specialist book series examining sauna from scientific, historical, physiological and technical perspectives.
• Professional Guides: Practice-oriented publications on selected areas of sauna operations, safety and professional practice.

The books are not separate from ISA education. They are part of the same knowledge system. 

The International Sauna Standardisation System – ISSS
Professionalisation requires more than courses and certificates. It also requires clear terminology and transparent professional principles. The International Sauna Standardisation System – ISSS is being developed to create structured recommendations and professional reference frameworks for selected areas of sauna practice. Possible fields include:

• terminology
• health-oriented sauna bathing
• Aufguss
• fragrance application
• safety
• professional operating procedures
• qualification terminology

ISSS is not intended to replace national laws, technical regulations or established standards organisations. It is intended to contribute a professional sauna-specific framework where internationally consistent terminology and guidance can improve understanding and quality.
International by Design.

ISA is built for international use.
The long-term model combines: central development + digital education + local practical training.
ISA develops the core curriculum, qualification framework, teaching materials, literature and quality standards centrally. Selected partners can then support education in their own countries through:

• local language
• regional communication
• practical training
• instructors
• training facilities
• participant support
• professional networks

This allows the system to remain consistent while respecting local sauna traditions.

International Standards – Local Sauna Culture
There is no single global sauna culture. And there should not be. Finnish sauna traditions differ from German Aufguss culture. Scandinavian practices differ from those found in Central Europe, North America or Asia. ISA does not seek to make these traditions identical. Our objective is to distinguish between two things: cultural diversity, which should be respected, and professional principles, which should be reliable.
Health, safety, thermal physiology, hygiene and professional responsibility do not become irrelevant simply because traditions differ. That is the balance ISA seeks to achieve. 

Building an International Professional Network
The next stage of ISA development is international cooperation. We are building relationships with:

• sauna schools
• spas and thermal facilities
• hotels and resorts
• professional organisations
• educational institutions
• industry partners

The objective is to create a network capable of combining international education with high-quality local practical training. The future of professional sauna education will not be built by one academy in one country. It will be built through a network of qualified people who share common professional standards.

Our Direction
ISA is currently undergoing a major phase of development. The new Sauna Master programme, its training compendia, the ISQS qualification structure and the growing international publication programme form the foundation of the next generation of the Academy. Our long-term objective is clear: to establish sauna as a serious professional field with transparent qualifications, reliable knowledge and internationally understandable standards. Not every tradition needs a standard.
Not every sauna employee needs a master qualification. But professional responsibility deserves professional competence.
